Zemana Getem Derasi

Tafese Tesfaye 1989 Zemana Getem Derasi

In observance of GreatLent, here is begena (bass lyre, King David’s harp) music from an Ethiopian Orthodox monk, circa 1996 (1989 according to the Ethiopia calendar). Contemplate your sinning ways and get with the minimally stark low-end rumble of this ancient instrument.

BTW — Dur-Dur Band Volume 5 (ATFA004) comes out next week, March 19, on LP, CD, MP3 and limited edition cassette. Get yours here.

ALSO—Go deep into Sudanese, Somali, Ethiopian and Eritrean music videos and Ghanaian TV sit-com, Nigerian cinema, tons of African TV advertisements and more at ATFA-curated weekend of YouTube videos on Network Awesome.

hey brian!

his name reads out Tafese Tesfaye

and this genre is called Begena (not Berena)

zemana getem derasi basically means: melody, lyrics and arragement.

great music by the way!

mietek: “ethiopian orthodox” refers to a christian denomination, not a branch of orthodox judaism… i think that’s what’s got you confused

as for the album: every recording of this instrument is a treasure, thanks so much brian!
