If you hadn't been familiar with Baba Salah until now, today might be your lucky day.
Some Songhai friends I made around Timbuktu, Mali introduced me to Baba Salah's music. As I traveled the region between that town and Salah's hometown Gao, I heard a lot more on the radio. I had also seen him play a show: Salah's was one of the only interesting main stage performances at Festival au Desert that year, apart from Khaira Arby's (which pretty much changed my life). But I hadn't run into a Salah cassette until very recently, when Chris from Sahel Sounds dropped by Brooklyn for a visit, generously showering me in tapes from the desert's edge.
This is essentially really excellent pop music. Have a listen.
Awesome Tapes from Africa DJ set as part of the always jammin Cool Places party @ Zebulon in Williamsburg on Saturday, May 15 (late-ish).
