I've been saving this near-perfect compilation of uptempo guitar pop from Zambia for a rainy day. Tracks 3, 4, 6, 7...well, pretty much all are sublime. Note: my copy of the cassette is missing the final track.

The excellent Matsuli blog has posted this recording before. And it's apparently available at Amazon.

PS: I'll be DJing Awesome Tapes from Africa on Saturday, Sept 19 at Zebulon in Brooklyn with a bunch of cool people and performers TBA.

Itumba must rank as one of my favourite African cuts of all time - bar none! Alfred Chisala Kalusha Jr. had an absolutely unique sound and his cutting out with his guitar gives me chicken skin every time...

This was actually a legit 1989 release (on vinyl and cd) from Globestyle, the visionary British label that was years ahead of everyone else in exploring global sounds with an edgier esthetic than the Putumayos of the world. This tape may actually be an African bootleg of the cd release. In fact you can still easily get the cd via Amazon.

But I should add, yes, a FANTASTIC compilation. My personal faves are Itumba and By Air. By the way, a Globestyle discography (not quite complete I think but pretty good) is here.

Butter Team said it best: 'hope to make it out next week..". (Actually, that would just be the backlog so far.) That Alfred Chisala Kalusha track from Zambia is now up there with the Franco et le Tout-Puissant OK Jazz track (for the record, Mata kita bloque) I heard on Belgian radio in 1986....THANK YOU! I think Tai Yaka on this cassette is actually Chikwati Chanji off Julizya's Tai Yaka album.

There's a vinyl rip (?) download of this compilation were Tai Yaka is the right track, but going by track length info, the cd version actually repeats the mistake on this cassette. Weird.

Incidentally, Impanga Ya Mambwe only appears on the cd and this is one of two parts (I don't know which).

Maybe someone with the cd can illuminate.
